In 2006 PDC players competed at the World Darts Trophy for the first time. Phil Taylor showed his strength immediately by winning the 2006 edition. He easily beat Martin Adams in the final, who lost his second final in Utrecht.
The Power was not really tested on his rush to the final. Brian Sorensen (3-0), John Walton (4-1), Colin Lloyd (5-1) and Ronnie Baxter (6-0) did not stand a chance against The Power. Michael van Gerwen, aged 17, was the Dutch highlight in Utrecht. His run was ended by Adams in the semi-final, but the young Dutchman defeated Mervyn King, Simon Whitlock and in the first round Raymond van Barneveld on his way to the last four. Niels de Ruiter reached the quarterfinal as well.
