The World Darts Trophy in 2005 was a special tournament for Gary Robson. Big Robbo surprised number three seed Mervyn King 6-4 in the final. He had already defeated Tony David, Tony Eccles, Martin Atkins and Mike Veitch on his way to the final.
Tony David had seven matchdarts against Robson in their first round encounter but missed them all.
The 2005 edition was a very disappointing one for the Dutch contestants. Only Mareno Michels reached the quarterfinals, losing to the eventual finalist King. Top favourite Raymond van Barneveld suffered an unexpected defeat against Martin Atkins in the second round, Niels de Ruiter was defeated by Martin Adams at the last sixteen and Vincent van der Voort was not able to reach the quarter finals as well.
