On Sunday, July 27, the fourth edition of the Women's World Matchplay was held in Blackpool. Once again, eight women fight for the title. Lisa Ashton would become the best for the first time with a victory over former winner Fallon Sherrock.
Ashton starts the tournament with a 4-2 win over Robyn Byrne, while Sherrock survived match darts against Gemma Hattem (4-3). Noa-Lynn van Leuven participated on behalf of The Netherlands. She won convincingly 4-0 against Lorraine Winstanley and qualified for the semi-finals for the first time. Top favorite Beau Greaves threw an average of 96.12 and defeated Kirsi Viinikainen 4-1.
In the semi-finals, Ashton faced Greaves. Everyone expected Greaves to easily claim the title today, but the experienced Ashton managed to surprise her with good play. Thanks to a few beautiful finishes, ‘The Lancashire Rose’ defeats Greaves 5-3 and reaches the final for the first time. She will play against Sherrock, who qualifies for the final for the third time. Just like against Hayter, Sherrock faces match darts against her, but Van Leuven fails to convert them either. Sherrock wins 5-4 and is in the final for the second year in a row.
The final turns into a game of many halves: both players play a good match, but it is Sherrock who gets to finish first for the title. Whereas she survived match darts in earlier rounds, she now misses handfuls of doubles to take the win. Ashton takes full advantage of this and manages to win the final 6-5. With that, she adds a magnificent title to her already impressive career.
