The seventh edition of the World Matchplay was held from 23 to 29 July, as always in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. After the double victory of Rod Harrington in 1998 and 1999 Phil Taylor would be the dominant force it this tournament in the new millennium. Between 2000 and 2004 no one succeeds to beat Taylor and only John Lowe and John Part in 2002 come in the vicinity of The Power.

In 2000 for the first time a Dutchman competes in the World Matchplay. Roland Scholten draws against the two-time defending champion Rod Harrington in the first round. Scholten pushes Harrington all match, but it is Harrington who wins the match by 11-9. Harrington world lose that year in the quarterfinals to Richie Burnett.

Another notable participant in 2000 is Martin Adams. The public can not enjoy Wolfie for long because he loses in the first round to the number three seed; Shayne Burgess. It is a spectacular game in which Burgess only manages to win in overtime. The match is played to 10 legs and ultimately Burgess wins 15-13. Taylor is unbeatable in 2000. On his way to the final he loses only 18 legs and wins 56. In 2000 the BDO players again take some notable scalps. Ronnie Baxter in the first round beats the number two seed Peter Manley. Richie Burnett beats the number five in the world Dennis Priestley in round two and one round later the number four, Rod Harrington. Both men reach the semi-finals, but Phil Taylor (17-9 against Burnett) and Alan Warriner (17-6 against Baxter) prove too strong. The final in 2000 therefore is between Phil Taylor and Alan Warriner. The final does not produce the fireworks of the previous two years, Taylor wins 18-12. With this victory Taylor is the first player in history to hold all three major PDC titles in. After the World Grand Prix and the World Championship he now also has the Word Matchplay trophy on his mantle piece.
