In 1989 Canada already hosted the WDF World Cup, when it was played in Toronto, in 2013 Saint Johns on the Eastern tip of the country was chosen as host city. Because some of the European and Asian teams were missing, the figures are a bit lagging behind on previous years. It will also be the last WDF World Cup for Norwegian Roy Price in his capacity as chairman of the WDF.
There were 27 men's teams, 25 women's teams and 11 youth teams present at this nineteenth WDF World Cup. All major countries on paper were there to compete in the Sports NL Center from 1 to 5 October. Among them, the men of Jersey for the first time.
Deta Hedman already participated in a WDF World Cup in 1991, where she reached the quarterfinals, four years later she takes the bronze. After a long break she is back in the English team in 2011 and again the tournament ends in the semi-finals. In 2013 her time has finally come, the Jamaican born takes the title by beating Germanies Irina Armstrong in the final.
It certainly wasn't an easy road to the final, but Hedman manages to beat Janni Larsen, Kiyo Shimizu, Dianne Gobeil, Kirsi Viinikainen and Corrine Hammond. Her opponent in the final; Armstrong beats on her way to the final Maret Liiri, Rachna David, Rhian Edwards and in the semi-final Canadian Cindy Hayhurst.
Deta Hedman is the fifth English woman to win the WDF World Cup women's singles title with her victory. Irina Armstrong's silver medal is the first in this event for Germany.
