In 1999, for the first time in history, a WDF cup is held in Africa. Durban is the host for the twelfth Cup. 32 countries participate in the tournament, of which 30 also have taken a ladies team. For the first time in 1999 there is also a WDF World Cup the young people. Nine teams take a boy and a girl to South Africa. All of them will compete in the Durban Exhibition Centre for the three major Cups from 6 to 9 October.

Four youth titles are up for grabs. Singles with the girls and boys, mixed pairs and of course the overall WDF World Cup. Botswana, Namibia, and the Seychelles are participating for the first time at a WDF World Cup, which is more global than ever before.

In the 1999 women's pairs tournament, it is the English ladies who take the title. They play their most important match in the semi-finals against the Dutch duo of Francis Hoenselaar and Kitty van Vliet. With the 4-3 win in that game, Trina Gulliver and Apylee Jones also take the overall title in 1999.

In the group matches there are some big surprises. In group D, Karin Nordhal & Mette Hansen from Norway and the Northern Irish pair Denise Cassidy & Norma Irvine are defeated by Trudy Johnson & Julie Nichols from the Bahamas. The team from the Caribbean progresses together with Francis Hoenselaar & Kitty van der Vliet from The Netherlands to the last sixteen. In group G, Dot McLeod & Helen Chalson from Australia and the duo Anne Wairimu & Lucy Jemtai from Kenya qualify for the knock-out phase. This is at the expense of Tarja Salminen & Heli Ohvanainen from Finland, who did win against Kenya, but did not qualify on leg difference.

In the last 16, the Kenyan pair also eliminates the duo from Scotland, Anne Kirk & Jackie Sharp, 4-3. Sandra Greatbatch & Vanda Adams from Wales are also surprisingly knocked-out by the Swiss duo Sabine Beutler & Lisa Huber. In the quarterfinals the fairy tale is over for Kenya, with 4-1 they lose honourably to the English ladies.

In the group stage, the English ladies have a tough draw with Denmark and Canada as opponents, but both games are won. Ireland and Kenya are then also beaten and in the semi-final the Netherlands. Swedish ladies Carina Ekberg & Kristina Korpii await in the final. The Swedish ladies play an excellent tournament. They win their group without losing a leg and then beat Canada, USA and Germany on their way to the final.

In the final the English ladies are really a bit better and they crown themselves champions with a 4-1 victory. It is the fifth time in the history of the WDF World Cup that England has managed to win the pairs. It is the first gold medal at a WDF World Cup for both Apylee Jones and Trina Gulliver.
