With a record number of entries of 40 men's teams the tenth WDF World Cup started in the Swiss city of Basel. With this fantastic number of entrees WDF Chairman Peter McMenamin and SDA President Felix Degen could already speak of a great success before the first dart was thrown. Not only the quantity was present also the quality continued to rise. Apparently, there are no "weak countries" anymore in the darts world.

The ladies also had a record number of entries with 35 countries in their seventh WDF World Cup from 4 to 7 October at the Messe Hall in the Swiss city of Basel. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Isle of Man and Latvia make their debut in Switzerland.

On Thursday afternoon, the ladies started the pairs event with the group matches. Here the German women were eliminated in the group stage, in their group The Netherlands and Scotland went through. The Belgian and Northern Irish ladies also disappeared from the tournament. They were sat together in Group C with New Zealand and South Africa.

In the last sixteen more surprises would follow. The South African duo Victoria Young & Linda Katske beat Janette Youngson & Donna Robertson from Scotland 4-1. The highly experienced team from New Zealand Noeline Gear & Janette Jonathan were 3-0 up against the title defenders Valerie Maytum & Francis Hoenselaar from the Netherlands. The New Zealanders also got darts on a double in the fourth leg, but missed and the Dutch came back to 3-1. There was hope of a comeback from the Netherlands, but that would not happen, they lost 4-1. The Welsh ladies Sandra Greatbatch & Leeanne Maddock escaped elimination as they narrowly won 4-3 against the Kenyan pair Lucy Jemtai & Mary Kerubo, who had also reached the quarterfinals surprisingly in 1993 and then also lost to Wales.

The Welsh Ladies lost in the quarterfinals to the Danish couple Gerda Sogaard & Ann-Louise Andersen 4-3. New Zealand won the Oceanic battle with Dot McLeod & Jodie Hislop from Australia 4-2. Karin Nodhal & Hege Lokken knocked out South Africa 4-1. The English top duo Mandy Solomons & Deta Hedman won 4-0 over Patricia Farrell & Amy Earle from Canada.

In the semi-finals the result twice was a 4-0. New Zealand beat Denmark and England beat Norway. In the final, the English ladies were soon up 2-0 in 18 and 25 darts. Noeline Gear & Janette Jonathan, helped by two 140’s in the third leg came back to 2-1, but Mandy Solomons & Deta Hedman struck back hard with a 14 darter. Yet the New Zealand duo also managed to raise their game and won the next leg in 17 darts. However, the English couple did not flinch and with scores of 100-100-100-60-105 followed by a finish of 36 they clinched the win in 18 darts. The fourth time in history that an English pair takes the gold.
