The thirteenth edition of the WDF Europe Cup was held in Mechelen, Belgium, from 17 to 19 October. The Nekker event hall is the place of action. Nineteen countries participated in the men and women, including Russia, which is present for the first time in ten years.
In the ladies singles, the elimination of defending champion Trina Gulliver in the first round is a big surprise. She loses 4-2 to the young Russian Anastasia Dobromyslova. In the quarterfinals the Russian also beats the experienced Scottish ace Anne Kirk, this time with 4 3. The other English lady Clare Bywaters does reach the quarterfinals and beats Olive Macintyre from Ireland in it. The other two quarterfinals are won by the Dutch ladies. Karin Krappen wins 4-3 against Julie Gore and Francis Hoenselaar 4-0 against Sabine Beutler from Switzerland.
In the semi-finals Bywaters is too strong for Krappen and Hoenselaar beats Dobromyslova 4-3. The final provides a great match, ultimately Clare Bywaters wins it by beating Francis Hoenselaar 4-2.
England has now won the ladies' singles seven times, Bywaters is the sixth lady to achieve this. Francis Hoenselaar remains stuck on one title for the time being. She now also has two silver singles medals at home. Anastasia Dobromyslova's bronze is Russia's first ever medal at a WDF Europe Cup.
