The anniversary edition of the WDF Europe Cup was held at the Astoria Convention Centre in Bundoran, Ireland from October 9-13. For the tenth edition of this tournament, no less than a record number of 24 countries travelled to Ireland. Austria, Spain, Hungary and the Isle of Man are the newcomers. With 20 countries, a record was also set for the ladies. Yet a lot stayed as it’s always been, because England once again dominated.
In the singles tournament, we found the two finalists from two years back in the final once again. The English defending champion Deta Hedman and the "Dutch Crown" Francis Hoenselaar.
The English beat Maureen Owens, Lisa Huber, Annette Hakonson and Sandra Pollet on her way to the final. In those four games, she lost a total of two legs. Francis Hoenselaar did not have an easy route to the final, she beat Lisbeth Hauen, former winner Heike Ernst, Tarja Salminen and in her semi-final the strong English lady Mandy Solomons. The Dutch ace also did not lose more than one leg in any of those games.
In the final, Francis eventually took the coveted European title by beating Deta Hedman 4-3 this time. It is the first gold ever for the Netherlands at a WDF Europe Cup.
