From 27 to 29 May, the second edition of the Dutch Darts Championship was held in the IJsselhallen in Zwolle. Initially, the tournament is called the Dutch Darts Masters, but because that tournament will have a World Series edition in 2022, it was renamed to the Dutch Darts Championship, which is why this is only the second edition. Michael Smith is the best all weekend in Zwolle and he takes a title on the EuroTour for the first time since 2017.
In the first two rounds, Smith impressively beat Danny Jansen and Damon Heta, both times with an average of well over 100. In the quarterfinals, Mervyn King is beaten and in the semi-finals Andrew Gilding is defeated.
Danny Noppert is his opponent in the final. The Dutchman, in front of his own audience successively beats Martin Schindler 6-5, Peter Wright with the same numbers and Noppert also needs the full eleven legs against Croatian ace Boris Krcmar. In the semi-final, Noppert beats Callan Rydz 7-2. With this, Noppert qualifies for the final of a EuroTour tournament for the second time in his career.
In the final, the first four legs are evenly distributed, then Smith breaks and takes a 4-2 lead. Yet the gap never becomes a big difference and eventually it ends in a 15th and decisive leg. Smith has already missed a match dart in leg 14. But he is not surprised in the last leg, he is the first to a finish and hits 104 for the title. It is the fifth EuroTour title for 'Bully Boy'. The counter remains at zero for Noppert for the time being.
