In 1989 Canada already hosted the WDF World Cup Youth, when it was played in Toronto, in 2013 Saint Johns on the Eastern tip of the country was chosen as host city. Because some of the European and Asian teams were missing, the figures are a bit lagging behind on previous years. It will also be the last WDF World Cup Youth for Norwegian Roy Price in his capacity as chairman of the WDF.
There were 27 men's teams, 25 women's teams and 11 youth teams present at this nineteenth WDF World Cup Youth. All major countries on paper were there to compete in the Sports NL Center from 1 to 5 October. Among them, the men of Jersey for the first time.
Singles
The boy’s singles are very open, but in the end Jamie Rundle from Australia and Quin Wester from the Netherlands reach the final. That final doesn’t live up to it’s expectations, especially for Wester. He never comes into any rhythm and loses without winning a leg. Dawson Murschell from Canada and Bradley Halls from England claim the bronze. It is a lot less exciting with the girls. The English Casey Gallagher only loses one leg until the final. Tiarna Smith from Australia does very well in the final, but still comes up just short. Bronze in the girls is for Sofie-Jahn Bendorff from Denmark and Tayla Carolissen from South Africa.
Mixed Pairs
The mixed pairs title seems destined for England, but the duo Casey Gallagher & Bradley Halls function less well as a pair than individually. Alicia Looker & Dawson Murschell beat them in the semi-final under loud encouragement from their home crowd. Jamie Rundle & Tiarna Smith from Australia win their semi-finals against Rebecca Graham & Bradley Weston from Scotland. To the delight of the Canadian fans, Looker and Murschell also win the final 6-4. Immediately a gold for Canada at their debut in a WDF Youth World Cup.
Overall World Cup Youth
For the first time in history, the duo that wins the mixed pairs tournament does not win the overall title. That honour goes to Australia with 69 points. England takes the silver with 61 points. The bronze is for Canada with 56 points. Australia becomes the second country to win the youth WDF World Cup twice with this win. Besides Canada, which is very successful with three medals, Turkey also makes its debut with the youth.
