The thirteenth edition of the WDF Europe Cup was held in Mechelen, Belgium, from 17 to 19 October. The Nekker event hall is the place of action. Nineteen countries participated in the men and women, including Russia, which is present for the first time in ten years.
The group stage of the pairs tournament in 2002 is extremely exciting. In two groups, the result between two pairs will ultimately make the decision in who will advance to the quarterfinals. In group A, Russia is going to the last eight in favour of Northern Ireland. In group C, the group of death, it is Scotland that crashes out because Wales wins the match against the Scots. England remains without a loss in that group.
In the quarterfinals, Wales and England quite easily beat Hungary and Germany respectively. The Netherlands and Sweden need a seventh and deciding leg in their quarterfinals. The Netherlands beat Ireland and Sweden beats the Russians. Those hard-fought victories apparently do the teams good as both the Netherlands and Sweden win their semi-finals. Defending champions Francis Hoenselaar & Karin Krappen from the Netherlands very easily beat Julie Gore & Jan Robbins from Wales 4-0. Swedes with Carina Ekberg & Maud Jansson have more trouble, but surprisingly beat Clare Bywaters & Trina Gulliver from England 4-2.
In the final, a seventh and deciding leg must decide the champion. Francis Hoenselaar & Karin Krappen eventually beat Carina Ekberg & Maud Jansson from Sweden with 4 legs to 3. It is the first time in the history of the WDF Europe Cup for ladies that the same pair has won the title two editions in a row. Sweden will have to keep the dream going of a second gold medal after Carina Sahlberg and Charlotte Eriksson won it in 1982.
