In 2004, the WDF Europe Cup returns to Finland for the third time. After Turku in 1986 and Kerava in 1992, Tampere is now the place of action. The fourteenth edition of the WDF Europe Cup was held at the Scandic Hotel Rosendahl from 13 to 16 October. With 21 participating countries for men and 20 for women, it can safely be called a successful edition. Estonia makes its debut at this tournament.
Only the Netherlands still has both duos in the quarterfinals of the pairs tournament. This proves to be the final destination for Mario Robbe & Dick van Dijk, they lose 4-0 to Jarkko Komula & Kim Viljanen from Finland. Raymond van Barneveld & Vincent van de Voort will progress to the semi-finals. They beat the Swedish duo Markus Korhonen & Johan Engström 4-1. The other semi-finalists are Gary Anderson & Mike Veitch from Scotland, they beat Austrian’s Franz Thaler & August Jost. The defending champions Mervyn King & Martin Adams are also still in the mix. The English pair beats Ritchie Davies & Martin Phillips from Wales 4-2.
In the semi-finals, England easily wins 4-1 against Finland, the Netherlands has a lot more trouble with Scotland but wins 4 legs to 3. This means that in the final three of the four winners from the last two editions will face each other.
It will be a blood-curdling finale with a lot at stake. If the Netherlands wins it then they also take the overall title, if they do not, England can still pass them with a win in the team event. England leads 3-2 and is waiting on tops when Vincent van der Voort hits another 180. Martin Adams then misses three darts for the match and Van Barneveld finishes. In the seventh and deciding leg, Raymond van Barneveld & Vincent van de Voort throw a 13-darter for the win. With that, Mervyn King & Martin Adams are unable to defend their title.
For Raymond van Barneveld it is his second gold medal in the pairs event, for Vincent van de Voort it is his first. But more importantly, of course, is that the duo helps the Netherlands to the overall win.
