WDF Europe Cup Men Pairs 1984

On 26 and 27 October, the Dutch Darts Association together with the WDF organized the Europe Cup IV for men and women in the sports center Ockenburg in The Hague. For the first time in history a darts event of this stature was organized in the Netherlands. All the top players from twelve European countries were present. But it was the English men who would claim all the top prizes.

The pairs tournament brought some big surprises in the first couple of rounds. The Welsh pair of Leighton Rees and Alan Evans went out 4-3 in the first round against the Finnish duo Arto Lintunen and Tapani Uitos. The other pair from Wales Peter Locke and Malcolm Davies beat the Scottish duo Jocky Wilson and Danny Cunningham 4-3 in round two. The Scots had dispatched the double European Cup Pairs winners from Sweden Stefan Lord and Björn Enqvist 4-0 in the first round. In the second round, Eric Bristow and John Lowe were beaten 4-3 by the Northern Ireland train Ray Farrell and David Keery.

The semi -finals line-up was Wales (Peter Locke and Malcolm Davies), England (Cliff Lazarenko and Dave Whitcombe) and surprisingly the two Finnish pairs (Arto Lintunen and Tapani Uitos) and (Harri Heino and Taisto Piiroinen). For both Finnish pairs the semi-final would be the end of a great tournament.

The final between England and Wales was a very exciting match. Initially the English seemed to be heading towards victory easily when they went up 2-0, but the Welsh came back strong with legs in 14, 15 and 18 darts to pull ahead 3-2. Yet they wouldn’t get any closer to the title, they lost the sixth leg and in the final leg the English pair played with confidence (100-140-123-98 - game shot D20) thus taking the title.
