The fourth edition of the German Darts Open was held in Jena from 9 to 11 September. Peter Wright takes the title for the second time in his career, after being too strong for Dimitri van den Bergh in the final.
The world champion plays in his first match against Raymond van Barneveld. 'Barney', who beats Ian White 6-0 in the first round, falls short against 'Snakebite': Wright wins 6-3 and advances to the last 16. There awaits him a cracker against Jonny Clayton. Both men throw a good average, but it is Wright who reaches the quarterfinals with a 6-3 victory. After beating Ross Smith 6-2, he faces a duel with Joe Cullen in the semifinals. The Englishman won the Hungarian Darts Trophy a week earlier, but is no match for a strong Wright. The Scot wins 7-4 and qualifies for the final. In that final he will meet Dimitri van den Bergh, who proves to be too strong for Jose de Sousa in the semi-finals (7-3). Wright and Van den Bergh make it a good final, after which it is ultimately 'Snakebite' who takes the title after an 8-6 victory. After 2017, the German Darts Open is a prey for Peter Wright for the second time.
In addition to Raymond van Barneveld, four more Dutchmen lose in the last 32: Dirk van Duijvenbode, Danny Noppert, Danny van Trijp and Geert Nentjes do not qualify for the last 16. Number 1 in the world Gerwyn Price eventually reaches the quarterfinals, but loses 6 -5 against Jose de Sousa at the last eight.
