In 2004, the WDF Europe Cup returns to Finland for the third time. After Turku in 1986 and Kerava in 1992, Tampere is now the place of action. The fourteenth edition of the WDF Europe Cup was held at the Scandic Hotel Rosendahl from 13 to 16 October. With 21 participating countries for men and 20 for women, it can safely be called a successful edition. Estonia makes its debut at this tournament.

In 2004 there are also four groups in the group stage of the team tournament. The most surprising thing about this group stage is that both Ireland and Northern Ireland are knocked out. In the quarterfinals, there are really only strong teams left. Raymond van Barneveld could have claimed all gold medals for himself this year, but that doesn’t happen. The Netherlands loses big to Wales in the quarterfinals. England simply beats Norway 9-3 and Finland wins the Scandinavian matchup with Sweden 9-4. The most exciting quarterfinal is between Scotland and Belgium. They level at 8-8 and in the seventeenth and deciding leg it is Scotland that takes the victory.

In the semi-finals, the Scottish quartet Gary Anderson, Paul Hanvidge, Mike Veitch & Paul McGimpsey will play against the foursome Ritchie Davies, Martin Phillips, Wayne Warren & Peter Johns from Wales. It is the Scots that qualify for the final through a 9-6 victory. In the other semi-final, Mervyn King, Martin Adams, Ted Hankey & John Walton play against the Finns Ulf Ceder, Marko Kantele, Jarkko Komula & Kim Viljanen on behalf of England. It is the English who end up winning that one, they beat the Finns 9-3.

The final between the defending champions from Scotland and the rock-solid English quartet promises to be a real battle. For Scotland, there is also something more at stake, not only the gold medal in the team event, but in the event of a win there is also bronze overall. Yet it is England that will win the team tournament for the 11th time. It's not an easy victory but Mervyn King, Martin Adams, Ted Hankey & John Walton still beat Gary Anderson, Paul Hanvidge, Mike Veitch & Paul McGimpsey with 9 7.
