World Grand Prix 2020

The World Grand Prix 2020 was held from 6 to 12 October at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and not in the normal home of the tournament in Dublin. The tournament is moved due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the 'double in, double out' tournament is also not open to the public.

The 23rd edition of the World Grand Prix was won by Gerwyn Price, who won this Major for the first time in his career. In the final, the ace from Wales defeated Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode, the big surprise of the tournament, 5-2 in sets. Price started the final strong and took a 2-0 lead in sets. Van Duijvenbode came back to 2-1 but cannot stop Price. Thanks to a number of strong finishes, he runs to a 4-1 lead. The sixth set goes to the Dutchman, after which Price brings the final score to 5-2 via a 102-finish. Thanks to this victory, Price is the new number two in the world.

On his road to the final, Price manages to beat two other Dutchmen. In the first round, the Welshman beats Jermaine Wattimena (2-0) and in the quarterfinals he defeats Jeffrey de Zwaan (3-1). Price also manages to claim wins over Kim Huybrechts (3-0) from Belgium and Dave 'Chizzy' Chisnall (4-3).

For Van Duijvenbode it is the best week of his career so far. The 28-year-old Dutchman defeats Mensur Suljovic (2-1) in the first round and beats Dimitri van den Bergh (3-1) from Belgium in the second. 'Titan' also manages to surprise top players Gary Anderson (3-1) from Scotland and Australia’s Simon Whitlock (4-1). This puts him in the final of a PDC Major tournament for the first time in his career.

The 2020 World Grand Prix is full of surprises, especially in the first round when six of the eight seeded players bow out. Peter Wright (2), Michael Smith (4), Rob Cross (5), Nathan Aspinall (6), Daryl Gurney (7) and James Wade (8) all find their Watreloo. Five-time winner Michael van Gerwen makes it to the quarterfinals, where he loses to Whitlock.
