The World Grand Prix 2019 was played from 6 to 12 October in the trusted CityWest Hotel in Dublin. The 22nd edition of this tournament was won by Michael van Gerwen, who retained his title from last year.

Van Gerwen reached the final after victories over Englishmen Jamie Hughes, Jeffrey de Zwaan, Mervyn King and Chris Dobey. On his road to the final, 'MvG' had some tough games, especially against Hughes and King.

In the final Van Gerwen played against Dave Chisnall from England, who beat Gerwyn Price, Stephen Bunting, Nathan Aspinall and Glen Durrant. The final was a one-sided match, in which 'Mighty Mike' took a 4-1 lead after a 1-1 score in sets. 'Chizzy' made the 4-2, but it was Van Gerwen won his fifth World Grand Prix after a 5-2 victory.

It was a particularly special edition for Chris Dobey who reached his first major semi-final after some great wins over Ricky Evans, Gary Anderson and Ian White. For Glen Durrant it was his second major PDC semi-final after the World Matchplay earlier this year still playing in his first year on the circuit. Dutch ace Jermaine Wattimena reached his first ever quarterfinal.

In addition to the title, Van Gerwen was good for the three highest averages of the tournament. His results from the second round, quarter-final and final are in the top three. His highest average is 94.79 that he scored in the second round against De Zwaan.

The 2019 World Grand Prix is the 34th major title for Michael van Gerwen while Dave Chisnall will have to wait longer for his first, he is now 0-6 in major finals, half of them were against MVG.
