The 2017 World Grand Prix was held from 1 to 7 October at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin. The top 16 of the world rankings, complemented with the top 16 best players of the past twelve months, complete the 32-member field. For the first time since the tournament moved to Ierland, no extra places were given to the Irish players. Perhaps a good sign because the only Irish player in the field wins the tournament. Daryl Gurney defeats Simon Whitlock in a ninth and decisive set and brings home his first major. It is also the first time an Irish player wins the World Grand Prix.

The edition of 2017 would be full of surprises. Before the tournament begins, Phil Taylor decides not to enter. The eleven-time World Grand Prix champion has played his last ever Grand Prix in 2016. One day before the Grand Prix begins, Gary Anderson pulls out. His wife is about to give birth and the Scot decides to stay home. A good decision because their daughter is born during the tournament.

When the tournament finally begins it rains surprises. In the first round, triple winner and number one in the world Michael van Gerwen loses to Schotsman John Henderson. Also, the number four Adrian Lewis and the number seven Michael Smith lose their first match which are less big surprises against Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price, respectively. Daryl Gurney also defeats Joe Cullen, Robert Thornton and John Henderson on his way to the final.

Simon Whitlock reaches a big final for the first time since the European Championship of 2013. The Australian survives a matchdart of Christian Kist in the first round, but then beats Richard North, Benito van Pas and Mensur Suljovic convincingly. In the final, Whitlock is 2-0 and 4-3 up, but in particular the seven ton plus finishes help Gurney to win his first major television title.
