The 40th edition of the BDO World Championship was held from 7-15 January at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Forty players from thirteen countries took a shot at the title. It would be the fifteenth time in the history of the tournament that the number one seed actually won the tournament.

Four seeded players didn’t survive the first round in 2017. Biggest victims were the seventh seed Dean Reynolds and two-time semi-finalist Wesley Harms who was ranked number nine this year.

In the second round Paul Hogan lead 3-0 in sets and 2-0 in legs against Glen Durrant. With three darts in his hand and 16 points left on the board Hogan hit a single 16 and thus wasted his chance to progress in the tournament. Durrant won four sets in a row and would be crowned World Champion later in the week. Former world champion Scott Mitchell was beaten in this round, Geert de Vos took him out 4-2.

In the quarterfinals all the highest seeded players won their game. There were some close games in that round going to a deciding set. The semi-finals were a lot less exciting. World Championship debutant Danny Noppert won 6-3 against Darryl Fitton and Glen Durrant defeated Jamie Hughes 6-1.

The final between Durrant and Noppert was very close and exciting in the beginning. After six sets the score line was 3-3, but from that moment Durrant started hitting his doubles better and Noppert got more and more misses on his. The last four sets all went to the Englishman who took the title 7-3. Durrant became the 25th BDO World Champion, the 15th from England.
