The 26th edition of the PDC WK Darts was played from December 13, 2018 to January 1, 2019. For the first time since 2010, the field of participants was extended and considerable. Of the usual 72 players, 96 men and women now did a throw to the World Championship title. In the end it was Michael van Gerwen who won his third world title.

The first round and second round are played together for the first time because of the high number of participants. Title holder Rob Cross gets rid of the opening night of a strong playing Jeffrey de Zwaan and goes on to the third round. That round is not achieved by a number of big names. For example, Peter Wright loses his first game against Toni Alcinas, Simon Whitlock does not win a set against Ryan Joyce and Gerwyn Price, Mensur Suljovic, Darren Webster, Joe Cullen, Ian White and Jonny Clayton also lose as a top sixteen player in the second round (their first round ). But the biggest surprise comes in the name of Darius Labanauskas: the Lithuanian wins by three sets to two against five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld.

With the last 32 it is not yet done with surprises. The fifth placed Daryl Gurney loses after a thriller with 4-3 against Jamie Lewis. Jermaine Wattimena gets one matchdart to beat Gary Anderson, but loses 4-3. Vincent van der Voort takes a 3-2 lead against Chris Dobey, but also has to recognize his superior in the Englishman. Besides Michael van Gerwen (4-1 against Max Hopp), Benito van de Pas also qualified for the last 16. In a difficult game he puts Toni Alcinas aside with 4-2.

The last sixteen round is the exit round for the World Champion. Rob Cross loses from an unleashed Luke Humphries and will not defend his title. Van Gerwen has no trouble with Adrian Lewis (4-1), but Van de Pas is eliminated. Brendan Dolan dominates him 4-1, which makes the Northern Irish go to the quarter-finals for the first time in eleven attempts. Chris Dobey gives it all against Gary Anderson, but eventually loses 4-3 against the double world champion. Ryan Joyce also goes to the quarterfinals: he wins after an exciting match against James Wade (4-3).

The quarter-finals do not bring the desired show: Nathan Aspinall, Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen are able to win their match 5-1. An unleashed Gary Anderson beats Dave Chisnall 5-2, meaning a clash with Van Gerwen awaits in the semi-finals. The clash will not give a lot of spectacle: Anderson does not play his best game and Van Gerwen wins 6-1. In the other semi-final, Nathan Aspinall will keep up to 3-3, but the debutant must eventually give the victory to Michael Smith: 6-3.

Van Gerwen hardly gets into trouble during his fourth World Championship final. 'Mighty Mike', partly due to some missed doubles from Smith, takes a big 4-0 lead. Smith is still knocking on the door, but Van Gerwen's lead never gets into trouble again. Finally, the Dutchman throws the double sixteen to win the game 7-3 and his third world title to his name.
