In 2011 there will be no world title number sixteen for Phil Taylor. The edition of 2011 will be remembered as one of the most open championships ever. There were doubts about the top form of Taylor before the World Championships started, which gave other players an extra boost. The tournament was played between December 16, 2010 and January 3, 2011 at the Alexandra Palace in London.

James Wade was the first of the contenders who was thrown out. In round two, he loses to Austrian Mensur Suljovic. The tournament really opens when in the quarterfinals Mark Webster beats Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson beats Raymond van Barneveld. It now is certain that we will be welcoming a new world champion for all semi-finalists have never won the PDC world title.

Gary Anderson makes the biggest impression in the tournament; he wins every match with conviction and has very high averages. Anderson reaches the final, his opponent in it is Adrian Lewis. Two quick players who make the final one to remember. Lewis throws a nine-darter in the first set of the match, the first ever in the final of a World Championship and that sets the tone for the match. Lewis always has the lead and eventually wins the final too. He has twenty maximums in the final and is crowned the youngest World Champion ever in the PDC up to this time.

Vincent van der Voort probably plays his best World Championship ever in 2011. He reaches the quarterfinals where he loses to the eventual winner, but in the rounds before he makes a big impression with his victories over Simon Whitlock and Wayne Jones.
