About PDC World Championship 1994
In 1993 the best, most well-known players separate themselves from the British Darts Organization (BDO) and start their own union, the world Darts Council, which would later be known as the Professional Darts Corporartion (PDC). In the Circus Tavern in Pufleet the annual PDC World Championship would be played, starting 1994. Especially in the beginning years it’s a case of filling up the contestant pool, with Americans and 1 or 2 exotic players. The PDC WC is traditionally played at the end of December, with the final in one of the first days of the new year.
Dennis Priestley takes home the first world title by beating Phil Taylor in the finale. This first year the WC would be played with 24 players, divided over 8 groups. The most surprising player this year is the American Steve Brown. Brown lived and played in The Netherlands for awhile and manages to make it to the 1994 semi finales by beating, among others, Alan Warriner. Phil Taylor proves too strong in the semi finales, and wins with 5-0. The finale is a dream setup with number 1 of the world; Dennis Priestley, and two time Embassy winner Phil Taylor. However, Priestly easily wins with 6-1 in sets. For the time being it would be the last defeat Taylor would suffer on this stage.
