About European Championship 2020
The thirteenth edition of the European Championship was eventually held in the Konig Pilsner Arena in Oberhausen. Initially, the tournament was to be played in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, but because of Corona the tournament was moved. The top 32 of the EuroTour Order of Merit competed in Germany. It had been a short season of only four EuroTour tournaments. Peter Wright eventually crowned himself the winner after a convincing 11-4 victory in the final against James Wade.
Peter Wright can look back to an excellent tournament. After victories against Gabriel Clemens, losing 2019 finalist Gerwyn Price and Steve West he faces Jonny Clayton in the semi-finals. The Scotsman struggles a little bit, but after winning six of the last seven legs he still beats Clayton by 11-8. Winner of 2018 James Wade has it a little bit more difficult on his road to the final. He eventually beats Maik Kuivenhoven, Nathan Aspinall and William O’Connor and encounters Devon Peterson in the semi-finals. The South African has a better average and a better finishing percentage, but still loses the final leg.
The final itself is never a real exciting match. Peter Wright gets his first break very soon and keeps that advantage till a 6-4 lead. After that ‘Snakebite’ wins five legs in a row and because of his 11-4 victory he is crowned as winner of the European Darts Championship 2020.
Dutchman Martijn Kleermaker causes perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament by beating defending champion Rob Cross in the first round. On the first day of the tournament a nine darter is hit. In the first round José de Sousa includes a perfect leg in his win against Jeffrey de Zwaan.
