High finish

In 2013, the European Championships is held for the sixth time, but for the first time the tournament will return to the same location in Müelheim. Four Dutch players are amongst the competitors this year. Jelle Klaasen surprises in the first round by winning against the seventh seed Wes Newton, but that's really the only surprise in that round. A round later a lot more top players fall like Raymond van Barneveld who loses to Robert Thornton, but especially when James Wade loses 2-10 against a very strong playing Jamie Caven and the sensation is complete when Taylor does not go to the quarterfinals. The Power loses very surprisingly to Belgian ace Ronny Huybrechts. A round later he also gets to the semi-finals at the expense of Thornton.

Caven should have been in the semis as well but he cannot take his 9-3 lead against Simon Whitlock across the finishing line, the last seven legs of the match go to his opponent who marches into the semi-finals and later into the final.

In the bottom half of the schedule, it's all a lot more 'normal'. Michael van Gerwen wins over fellow countryman Jelle Klaasen and reaches the semi-finals. Adrian Lewis also reached that stage at the expense of city rival Andy Hamilton. In retrospect, this tournament will be the resurrection of Jackpot. After 18 months without really good results he beats the ‘man in form’ Van Gerwen and later in the finals also defeats defending champion Simon Whitlock. Adrian Lewis wins a major televised tournament outside the World Championship for the first time in his career.
